A live example of Holistic Web Design: Ars Magna website
Building a website with a holistic approach means shaping each and every detail so that it can convey its message through all levels of perception. Let us share with you some insights about the creation of our Association website: look at its homepage.
The Association for Intercultural Research and Study Ars Magna takes its name from Athanasius Kircher’s work Ars Magna Lucis et Umbrae, as emblematic of a way of comprehending reality through the category of Complementary opposites. The use of its title page as background throughout the site emphasizes this category as the main key to interpret all content. Giving due importance to the influence of the peripheral view on the subconscious, we extended the image so that the symbols of the Two Principles are always visible at the sides of the page body, and we positioned it at the top so that all content is placed under the same Aegis that Kircher wanted for his work.
Your logo should be the extreme visual summary of your message. To illustrate the principle of the union of opposites and interculturalism, Ars Magna logo was formed by combining two images: the one on the left belongs to the Chinese Taoist tradition, the right one to Western Alchemical Astrology, from Kircher’s Ars Magna Lucis et Umbrae.
Both images are graphs showing the same phenomenon, that of the cyclical waning and waxing of complementary opposites, through the symbols that each tradition has developed.
The two graphs were fused to invoke the symbol of infinity, and the transparencies were studied to obtain this particular fusion with the background – from which everything emerges.
The aim pursued by Ars Magna Association is spiritual evolution reached through the meeting of different cultural forms. In the homepage, a slideshow illustrates an ideal path towards perfection through 15 images from various eras and traditions. The slides are combined to emphasize their similarities: they are all referring to the same experiences.
In the home page body, we find the same image of the flyer that presents the Association and invites to visit the site. This graphic solution summarizes Ars Magna’s approach: as a watermark background, Kircher frontispiece supports an image that illustrates the same principle of complementary opposites with symbols of the Alchemical Taoist Tradition: Tiger and Dragon.
Graphic elements as doors and interpretative keys
The graphics under the page body are links to articles that develop the topic of the page. In Ars Magna website, all series of elements start with the link to the Manifesto page, as fundamental basis for understanding all site content. Together with the basic links of the site, we have page-wide elements for ongoing initiatives and call-to-action.
The textual content has a great relevance in the site, so it was important to balance it with a rich and pertinent imagery. To reiterate the cultural approach of the Association, most images have a link to a valuable resource: e.g., you can browse online a 1646 edition of Ars Magna Lucis et Umbrae.
Keeping up-to-date: responsiveness and sharing buttons
Ars Magna Association wants to merge traditional knowledge and new technologies, so its site must be constantly up to date. Web traffic is increasingly shifting from computers to mobile, and we are among the first to have already implemented the new button that allows smartphone surfers to share the page directly with their WhatsApp contacts. And of course all of our themes are responsive: the contents resize to suite perfectly every type of screen.
A website that conveys a holistic image
Holistic Web Design creates product images that reverberate their message through all reading levels. Analyzing every detail of Ars Magna website, you will see how harmoniously and constantly it reiterates the character and the message of the Association: from the Login page, illustrated as the beginning of an Iter Extaticum to be performed under the Divine guidance along with the emblematic figure of Father Kircher, to the Contact page, entrusted to the Messenger of the Gods. Ars Magna website offers the visitor the richest experience on all levels of perception, sensory and intellectual, in a constant stimulus to research, experimentation, Evolution.
Holistic Web Design also means creating live structures, that constantly transmute and adapt to follow the continous changes new technologies bring about, both in available tools and in user needs. Every detail has to be in constant remodeling, and the choice of WordPress allows us to stay always at the forefront in the art of web developing.
