WordPress: the ideal choice for Holistic Web Design
What is a CMS
WordPress is a CMS, Content Manage System: a CSM is a structure that allows you to publish and manage content on the web. For example, imagine your server as a hotel and the your site’s web space as a room: the CMS is the wardrobe, with its structure of shelves, drawers and hangers that allows you to use the space in a comfortable and tidy way. Before the advent of CMS, each site was built from scratch, as if we were to make our wardrobe starting from the tree: as only a skilled craftsman can produce a fine piece of furniture and fittings from the raw material, building a website required specific and in-depth programming skills, and of course many, many hours of work. With the use of a CMS, the basic structure of the site has already been built and tested, so that we can immediately organize our space in security, focusing on functionality and design.
WordPress is an open-source CMS, developed and maintained by an international community of programmers. Born in 2003, today WP is the most popular CMS, with more than sixty million active sites, or almost a quarter of the web, and it has become the first choice for those who want the most out of new communication possibilities offered by the internet: in 2014 WP was adopted by 22% of new domains registered in the USA. Among WordPress users, there are some of the most prestigious names of culture, publishing, business and entertainment, as well as various government sites: we give you a small essay in our slideshow, but if you visit WordPress Showcase, you can navigate the categories and find out how many important sites are built and managed with WordPress.
A team at the forefront of IT
Using WordPress means having an international team of hundreds of experienced programmers who are constantly workingto make our website more flexible and reliable: security updates are automated, and about every six months, the structure is renewed to implement the new features that the team has developed. We need not worry, to name a few, to find solutions to new security threats, nor for new services required by the use of mobile devices: the WordPress team designs and develops for us the best tools to keep our site up to the edge, exactly at the level of the most prestigious international ones. And, if necessary, we can count on a support service available 24 hours a day, seven days a week: the WordPress community.
An extraordinary community
WordPress is an open-source CMS: its sourcecode is open and free, and this has allowed the birth of a unique international community working to update and develop it. So far, WordPress core structure has been translated into 48 languages. The available plugins, i.e. applications that allow you to make changes and add new features to the main structure, are more than 35,000. The Help Forum keeps in constant contact developers, designers and simple users, so that each issue is addressed in real time and solved quickly. This constant confrontation and cooperation between people of different backgrounds and cultures is critical to the success of WordPress as a social phenomenon: just think of the Wordcamps, informal conferences organized locally so that WP users can meet physically, exchange experiences and launch new proposals which are then shared online with the whole community. Really, using WordPress means that you are never alone.
After the first sites created in 2002 with Frontpage and Dreamweaver, we approached the CMS, and, after some experience with Joomla, since 2010 we have been working only with WordPress. Using WordPress has enabled us to create beautiful projects in a much faster and more efficient way than the so-called traditional instruments and others CMS, but above all it proved to be the ideal solution to infuse the philosophy of our Association into our projects. Having Evolution as the fundamental target in every aspect of life, it was essential that our sites could constantly evolve as well. Allowing us to easily change any look and feel or bring out new features without jeopardizing the efficiency of the site, WordPress has allowed us to transform the traditional website, static and rigid, in an organic and living structure that grows and evolves with experience, in real time, in perfect accord with the principles of Holistic Webdesign.
